Woman charged after mother strangled unconscious

A 29-year-old woman has been charged after allegedly strangling her mother into unconsciousness during a family violence incident in south Canberra.

Police allege the woman struck her mother over the head with a bottle about 5.40pm on Tuesday before strangling her until she lost consciousness.

The victim allegedly regained consciousness, but the woman attempted to strangle her again before she escaped the home and contacted police.

The woman was arrested about 7.30pm. The victim was taken to hospital for treatment.

The 29-year-old has been charged with aggravated common assault, aggravated choking and rendering a person insensible, and choking, suffocating or strangling another person.
