One in every 20 light vehicles registered in the ACT is now battery electric, according to ACT Government data cited by the Australian Electric Vehicle Association.

The association says about 17,000 electric vehicles are now registered in Canberra, with registrations accelerating during the first half of 2026 after several years of relatively flat growth.

AEVA ACT spokesperson Paul Wayper said higher petrol prices and the ACT Government’s loan scheme for lower-cost electric vehicles had contributed to the increase, but argued stronger long-term policies would be needed to meet the territory’s electric vehicle targets.

The association says the ACT also has 19 light rail vehicles, more than 100 electric buses and a growing number of electric micromobility vehicles.
