9000 lose power in severe overnight storms

About 300 Evoenergy customers remained without power on Thursday morning as crews continued to assess and repair widespread damage to the electricity network.

About 9000 homes and businesses across Canberra lost power during severe storms overnight, with electricity restored to most users by Thursday morning.

Evoenergy said about 300 customers remained without power on Thursday morning as crews continued to assess and repair widespread damage to the electricity network.

The storms brought down trees and branches across the ACT, damaging overhead powerlines and other electricity infrastructure in several areas.

The electricity distributor said crews worked overnight in strong winds and heavy rain to restore supplies, while planned maintenance work had been postponed to allow additional staff and contractors to focus on storm repairs.

Evoenergy spokesperson Bronwen Butterfield said more damage was expected to be identified as inspections continued throughout the day.

She said crews would continue assessing the network, making damaged infrastructure safe and restoring power to affected customers.

Residents are being urged to stay well clear of fallen powerlines or trees tangled in powerlines and report hazards to Evoenergy. Restoration times will be updated as more damage is assessed.
