A police officer has been stabbed during the arrest of a man following a series of dangerous driving incidents across Canberra’s south.
A 26-year-old Yarralumla man, who was subject to an outstanding warrant, has been charged after allegedly stabbing an officer during his arrest in Richardson on Friday.
Police allege the incident began about 9.15am when officers attempted to stop a white Kia Stonic SUV on Erindale Drive in Wanniassa. The driver failed to stop and sped off through residential streets.
About 10.35am, the vehicle was sighted again on Anketell Street, Greenway, where police allege the driver again refused to stop, driving at high speed and on the wrong side of the road as he evaded officers through Tuggeranong.
During the pursuit, police allege the vehicle was driven directly at officers and police vehicles, forcing them to take evasive action. The Kia was also allegedly involved in a collision with another car near Calwell before continuing.
About 10.50am, the vehicle crashed into a tree in Richardson. The driver fled on foot and was pursued by police.
During the arrest, the man allegedly produced a knife and stabbed an officer in the arm and torso.
The injured officer was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Police will also allege the man provided false details and that a replica firearm was found inside the vehicle, which had been reported stolen from Queensland.
The man, who was subject to an outstanding warrant, has been charged with multiple offences including dangerous driving, failing to stop for police, driving at police, assault, and possessing a prohibited firearm and a knife without a reasonable excuse.
