A 37-year-old Greenway man has been charged with deceiving a seller to obtain a yellow Holden Monaro and later fleeing from police.
Police allege the man contacted a vehicle seller through an online car-sales platform in late February and arranged to inspect the vehicle.
He allegedly provided fraudulent documents and a fake screenshot claiming payment had been made for the car.
Believing the payment would be received within 24 hours, the seller allowed the man and a woman to take possession of the vehicle. When the money did not arrive, the matter was reported to police.
Officers later sighted the Monaro during routine patrols in Monash on Monday.
After police activated emergency lights and sirens directing the driver to pull over, the driver allegedly failed to stop and accelerated away.
Subsequent enquiries linked the man to hotel stays in Tuggeranong and Woden during the period of the alleged offending.
Police located and arrested the man at a Tuggeranong hotel about 11pm on Thursday.
He has been charged with obtaining property by deception, taking a motor vehicle without consent, driving a vehicle without consent, failing to stop for police and dangerous driving.
