Urgent call to give young Zoe a safe home

MacKillop Family Services… “There’s a misconception that only certain people can be carers. But whether you’re single, partnered, retired, or still working, if you have compassion, resilience and a willingness to learn, you can make a life-changing difference.”

MacKillop Family Services is urgently looking for current or prospective foster carers in Queanbeyan to support a young girl who cannot live safely in her own home.

Oscar Cunningham, a therapeutic specialist with MacKillop. says 12-year-old Zoe (not her real name) needs a stable, nurturing environment with patient and committed carers who can offer consistent care, emotional support and guidance.

Zoe is currently living in temporary accommodation far from her community, school and support networks, highlighting the critical need for a local family arrangement.

“Zoe has enormous potential, but like many teens in out-of-home care, she has had a tough start in life,” said Mr Cunningham.

“What she needs right now is a safe home with a carer who won’t give up on her – someone who can offer structure, kindness and a fresh start.”

Specialist training and 24/7 support are available for people willing to step into this vital role. Carers also receive a tax-free allowance to help meet the needs of the young person in their care.

“There’s a misconception that only certain people can be carers,” he said.

“But whether you’re single, partnered, retired, or still working, if you have compassion, resilience and a willingness to learn, you can make a life-changing difference.”

MacKillop is calling on people across the Queanbeyan region to consider becoming a carer, particularly those with experience in education, youth work, nursing, disability support, or mental health work.

A special information session will be held in the Googong Community Centre, corner of Gorman Drive and McPhail Way, Googong, at 4.15pm on December 9 where prospective carers can find out more about what’s involved in foster care, or visit www.mackillop.org.au
