Suspect speeds off from police on his wheel rims

A 27-year-old Belconnen man has been arrested and charged with driving and family violence offences following a high-speed pursuit on wheel rims through the inner-south early on Wednesday morning.

On Monday, a warrant for his arrest was issued after he had allegedly assaulted his partner on Saturday and fled from police.

At 1.30 on Wednesday morning police cordoned off the immediate area surrounding a house in O’Malley where they believed the man was at.

A short time later, he left the house and got into a grey VW Jetta. Police had placed tyre-deflation devices under the car’s tyres, deflating some of them as he left. Further devices flattened the remaining tyres a short distance down the road.

Despite the flat tyres and driving on wheel rims, the man tried to evade police through multiple inner-south suburbs before entering Queanbeyan and returning to the ACT. He reached speeds of up to 120km/h in an 80km/h zone during the pursuit.

The man eventually lost control of the vehicle on Uriarra Road, Beard, and hit a signpost, where he was arrested.

He  has been charged with reckless driving, failing to stop for police and breaching good behaviour obligations. He will also face charges of aggravated assault occasioning actual bodily harm, aggravated common assault, forcible confinement, property damage, escaping from custody and failing to stop a motor vehicle for police.
