Canberra Photographic Society is celebrating 80 Years of artful snapping in the nation’s capital.
In August 1945 Keith Carnall, of Ainslie, placed an advertisement in the local paper inviting people interested in forming a camera club to contact him, resulting in a meeting on September 11 in the then 2CA Theatrette in Mort Street, Civic.
There it was decided to form the Canberra Photographic Society, to hold regular meetings, show screenings of different films and discuss photographic matters.
The meetings were to be held on Tuesday evenings as they are to this day.

For the following 80 years, the society has continued to provides opportunities for photographers to share their skills, participate in critique and exhibition nights, listen to speakers and attend workshops and excursions, all in a convivial atmosphere.
To celebrate the society’s big birthday, an exhibition of 40 framed prints by current members and a video showing historical images of Canberra members’ images will be held in the Civic Library.
The Essence of Canberra, Civic Library, September 11-October 11.
