Local artist wins a prize at at Sculpture in the Valley

Stephen Harrison’s prizewinning sculpture We dreamt of him long before we inhabited this earthly sphere (Son of Saturn and his pet sphinx).

Murrumbateman sculptor Stephen Harrison has won the $6000 Highly Commended [second] prize for Outdoor Sculpture from 76 entries at Sculpture in the Valley in Kangaroo Valley.

His work, titled We dreamt of him long before we inhabited this earthly sphere (Son of Saturn and his pet sphinx), is crafted from lead and bronze, and weighs 65 kg.

Harrison, a graduate in graphic investigation and sculpture from the ANU School of Art & Design, is a well-known member of the Canberra arts community. He also won the $1000 Wollombi Valley Sculpture Festival Prize, carrying automatic entry to the 2026 festival.

In the same event, the $14,000 first prize for outdoor sculpture was awarded to Oberon artist Ingrid Morley for her work Falling Softly and the first prize for indoor sculpture was awarded to New England artist, James Rogers for his work, BATHO 1.
