Landscape architect, environmental educator and host of ABC TV’s Gardening Australia, Costa Georgiadis, has been chosen from 25 Australians as the subject of the National Portrait Gallery’s next commission.
Last year the gallery invited the public to choose who they most wanted to see represented in the NPG and after performers, athletes, musicians, comedians, actors, fashion designers, activists and advocates for social change were suggested, Georgiadis received the most votes.
Some voters commented on his “down to earth” personality, his commitment to environmental advocacy and his “unique look” and “interesting facial features” which might make for a fascinating portrait.
Georgiadis said he was looking forward to working with an artist, as yet unnamed, to create the portrait.
“Making art is similar to creating a garden,” he said.
