Cameras to turn an eye to seatbelt offences next month

The use of mobile device detection cameras will include issuing fines for not wearing a seatbelt from November 3.

The ACT government said detection of seatbelt offences by cameras would play a vital role in ensuring compliance with seatbelt laws.

Infringements would apply to drivers if either they or their passengers were caught by cameras not wearing a seatbelt or not wearing it correctly. Individuals with a medical exemption from wearing a seatbelt could submit documentation directly to Access Canberra if detected by a camera.

“The expansion of detection by cameras complements other camera programs targeting speeding, red-light running and illegal mobile phone use to reduce the number of serious injuries and deaths on ACT roads,” the government’s unattributed media announcement says.
