Police are investigating the death of a 34-year-old inmate at Alexander Maconochie Centre on Thursday morning.
He was found unresponsive in his cell by AMC staff at about 7.50am.
Despite efforts by staff and emergency services, he was declared dead a short time later.
Police are investigating the circumstances of the incident and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
As the death is a death in custody, a hearing must be held at a future date.
