Cellist pays immersive homage to a wonderful world

Cellist Christian Pierre La Marca

French cellist Christian Pierre La Marca is coming to Snow Concert Hall with his immersive multimedia concert, Wonderful World.

Billed as an homage to our planet, the idea is not unlike Richard Tognetti and the ACO’s River, seen earlier this year at the Canberra Theatre with narration from Willem Dafoe and visuals by Jennifer Peedom.

La Marca has performed solo on some of the biggest stages in the world and with leading orchestras such as Philharmonia Orchestra, London Chamber Orchestra and Orchestre National de France.

Driven by his dedication to environmental conservation, Wonderful World celebrates nature and the need for its preservation by weaving videos and images by environmentalist, activist and photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand in with the music in what he calls “a concert show”.

The visuals are spectacular and sometimes surprising, as when an elephant is seen thrashing through a forest to Rimsky-Korsakov’s Flight of the Bumblebee.

La Marca will be joined on stage by Israeli pianist Itamar Golan to perform jazz classics such as Gershwin’s Summertime alongside contemporary tunes like Mancini’s Moon River and Louis Armstrong’s What a Wonderful World, which gives the concert its title.

The performance, Snow’s music curator Ana de la Vega calculates, will transcend the traditional concert experience, offering “an immersive experience for audiences, surprisingly different to what you would expect from a traditional classical concert performance.”

Wonderful World, Christian Pierre La Marca and Itamar Golan, Snow Concert Hall, July 20.
