New opposition Leader Leanne Castley has unveiled her shadow ministry, sharing portfolios across seven MLAs, including newcomers Deborah Morris and Chiaka Barry.
Elizabeth Lee, who lost the October 19 election and subsequently the party leadership, has declined any responsibilities beyond her own electorate work. Her ally, Mark Parton, has accepted the role of Assembly speaker.
Neither Ms Castley nor deputy leader Jeremy Hanson have taken the more traditional role as shadow treasurer. That’s been assigned to former public servant Ed Cocks. Ms Castley has held her health role and Hanson will still speak to education.
“We’ll fight to bring common sense back into government to address the cost-of-living crisis, falling health and education services, and the lack of basic municipal services,” Ms Castley said.
The shadow ministry includes, for the first time, a dedicated portfolio focused on government services and customer experience, which has also been assigned to Mr Cocks.
Ms Castley said that after 23 years in government Labor was failing to deliver “great quality services for the high rates, fees and charges that Canberrans pay”.
“Instead of digital drivers licences, we get tens of millions of dollars wasted on bungled IT upgrades. Instead of an effective Fix My Street program, we’ve had millions of dollars wasted on… contracts for ‘complexity and systems thinkers’.”
