Man extradited to face sentencing for 27 crimes

The extradited man arrives at Canberra airport on Saturday.

A 22-year-old man, who had been facing sentencing for 27 charges in the ACT, has been extradited from Queensland, after he absconded from Canberra in 2020.  

Police say the man was convicted on 27 charges in August 2020, and initially sentenced to four years’ imprisonment, which was suspended upon his entering into a Drug and Treatment Order (DATO).

In the following months, he failed to comply with the DATO, which the court extended twice. After breaching his DATO for a third time, the man was arrested pending re-sentencing and granted bail. He then failed to appear in court in November 2020.

A warrant for his arrest was issued in June 2021.

On Wednesday the man was arrested in Nundah, Queensland, by Queensland police. He was extradited to the on Saturday afternoon.

The 27 offences the man was found guilty of in August 2020 were:

  • Five counts of Drive Motor Vehicle Without Consent 
  • Two counts of Minor Theft 
  • Two counts of Obtain Property by Deception 
  • Two counts of Damaging Commonwealth Property 
  • Two counts of Fail to Stop Motor Vehicle for Police 
  • Two counts of Aggravated Reckless Driving 
  • Aggravated Dangerous Driving 
  • Reckless Driving; 
  • Theft 
  • Use Unregistered Vehicle 
  • Escape from Arrest or Custody 
  • Burglary 
  • Resist Territory Official 
  • Possession of Ammunition 
  • Possess Knife in Public 
  • Drug Driving 
  • Crash and Not Give Particulars 
  • Unlawful Possession of Stolen Property
