The ACT Government will refer the rollout of the MyWay+ ticketing system to the Auditor-General following a Legislative Assembly inquiry that found the project was not ready for launch and “did not work properly”.
The government tabled its response to the inquiry in the Assembly, agreeing to several recommendations, including a formal examination of the project by the Auditor-General.
It also accepted a recommendation calling for greater transparency about whether major projects are being delivered on time and on budget.
The inquiry made a series of findings about the handling of MyWay+, concluding the system was “clearly not ready for launch” and attributing its failures to poor project management, flawed decision-making, weak design and inadequate community testing. The report said these issues had undermined public confidence in the Territory’s public transport system.
In October, the Assembly censured Transport Minister Chris Steel over the handling of the rollout. While Mr Steel accepted responsibility for the issues with MyWay+, he did not resign.
Canberra Liberals Leader and Shadow Minister for Transport Mark Parton said the decision to involve the Auditor-General followed scrutiny initiated by Yerrabi MLA Leanne Castley, which he said had exposed significant shortcomings in the project’s planning and delivery.
Mr Parton said independent oversight was necessary and again called on the minister to step aside.
