‘Cahoots Lab’ takes the pressure off artists

“Colony in the spirit,” by Lynden Bassett

“CAHOOTS Lab is a season of unfinished art,” goes the promo, and it’s kicking off this weekend.

It’s a free program spearheaded by You Are Here, a focal body for experimental arts in Canberra, which is, throughout April, featuring the work of  15 artists who all work in disciplines ranging from glass to projection art, with the idea of giving them a space to test ideas and share their processes, with the artist becoming  the priority instead, as is usual, the audience.

There’s time enough for full public showings, but in this case the reasoning is that audiences may help contribute to the future excellence and sustainability of Canberra arts by simply being there, maybe discussing the art, giving written feedback down, or even joining in. It takes the pressure off hard working artists.

Here’s the full program for this weekend:

  • “Oothecae”, a new work combining woven objects, collaged drawings, and light projections by Julie Monro-Allison, shown in a synthesised immersive environment. F Block, Gorman Arts Centre, 1.30-3pm, April 15.
  • Music group composers’ ensemble presents a concert of new automatic wind music relating to the dance of consciousness, F Block, Gorman Arts Centre, 6pm, April 15.
  • “Threads of Journey”, a work-in-progress community engagement and visual arts project, Legislative Plaza, 196 London Circuit, Civic, noon- 4pm, April 16.
  • “Colony in the Spirit”, a solo noise music and sound collage by Lynden Bassett, Courtyard Studio, Canberra Theatre, 2pm-3.15pm, April 16.
