Second man charged over sheep cruelty

A second man has been charged over a burglary and animal cruelty incident at a rural Tuggeranong property last month that left four sheep dead and two seriously injured.

The 27-year-old man has been charged with four counts of aggravated cruelty to animals causing death, two counts of aggravated cruelty to animals causing serious injury and aggravated burglary.

An 18-year-old man was arrested and charged on October 9, while an arrest warrant has now been issued for a teenager allegedly involved in the incident.

Police allege several people entered the property, adjacent to the Monaro Highway, on the night of September 16, rounded up eight sheep and moved them into a holding pen.

Several sheep were deliberately injured, leaving one dead and three others requiring euthanasia because of the severity of their injuries. Two more suffered serious injuries.

The property’s residence was also entered and ransacked.

The incident was discovered when the owner arrived at the property on September 17 and found the injured animals.

Police searched a Richardson property on October 8 and seized items believed to be connected to the incident.

Investigations are continuing.
