Police mascot Constable Kenny Koala is among more than 130 individuals and organisations recognised in the 2026 Chief Minister’s Canberra Gold Awards.
A total of 106 individuals and 31 organisations are receiving the awards, which recognise people and groups that have contributed to Canberra’s community life for more than 50 years.
Constable Kenny first appeared in Canberra in September 1975 on the Capital Television children’s program Junior Police 7. Since then the character has become a familiar presence in local schools, delivering safety messages to more than 20,000 children each year.
The program focuses on road safety, protective behaviours, online safety and decision-making.
Among the 31 organisations also recognised this year are eight ACT public schools, several sporting and community clubs, the Voluntary Guides of the Australian War Memorial and the Canberra Potters Society.
Since the awards were established in 2005, almost 5000 individuals and more than 200 groups have received the awards.
Constable Kenny said working with young people across the city had been a highlight.
“After being a part of the Canberra community for 50 years, I have come to truly appreciate the warmth, generosity, and friendliness of everyone you meet,” he said.
“The young people I visit in schools every day are the heart, soul and energy behind the community.”
