P-plater makes cocaine testing debut

A 19-year-old P-plater was caught driving under the influence of cocaine in Campbell on New Year’s Day, say police.

He was the first to be detected now that – since Wednesday – ACT police became able to test for the presence of cocaine in a driver’s system. Each roadside drug test is now able to detect cannabis, methamphetamine, MDMA and cocaine.

At about 8am, police were random drug and alcohol testing on Fairbairn Avenue and stopped the man’s Mitsubishi Magna.

The man was issued with a court attendance notice for a later date.

While penalties for possession of certain illicit drugs have changed and cannabis possession has been decriminalised, police say it remains an offence to have any of those drugs present in your system while driving.
