Mercedes theft: two men charged, another on the run

Two men have been charged after a Mercedes Benz S400 was allegedly stolen from a Gungahlin home in the early hours of Sunday, with one of the men also accused of assaulting a police officer later that day.

By late Sunday night police had spotted the Mercedes parked in O’Connor, with three men inside it.

Police say the men pushed them aside and ran off with a 19-year-old allegedly hitting a police officer in the face.

Police say they arrested the assailant, who was subject to bail conditions, in the backyard of a nearby property. He has been charged with driving a motor vehicle without consent and assaulting a police officer.

A 31-year-old man, who was also in the Mercedes, was found hiding in a shed and was arrested. He has been charged with riding in a motor vehicle without consent.

The third man has not been found.
