Heatwave warning for sweltering weekend

Canberra is in for a severe heatwave for from Saturday to Tuesday when temperatures are predicted to reach mid to high 30Cs with overnight temperatures mid teens and low 20Cs, the Bureau of Meteorology predicts.

“Severe heatwaves can be dangerous for many people, especially older people, babies, children, pregnant and breastfeeding women, people with medical conditions and people who are unwell,” says BoM.

Locations likely to be impacted include Canberra, Belconnen, Gungahlin, Tuggeranong and Woden Valley.

“Seek a place to keep cool, such as your home, a library, community centre or shopping centre.

“Severe heatwave conditions are predicted to ease during next week.”

The next heatwave warning will be issued by 3pm on Saturday.

ACT Ambulance Services advise Canberrans to:

  • drink plenty of water,
  • never leave people or pets in cars,
  • seek out air-conditioned buildings,
  • dress in light and loose fabrics, plan ahead for activities in the coolest part of the day,
  • avoid exercising in the heat and
  • look after those most at risk.
