Severe storms may batter Canberra

BOM’s map of rain around Canberra.

SEVERE thunderstorms are likely to produce heavy rainfall and large hailstones that may lead to flash flooding in the next several hours over Canberra, Goulburn, Captains Flat, Queanbeyan and Tidbinbilla, says the Bureau of Meteorology.

“A surface trough and an unstable airmass are in place today to generate severe thunderstorm activity over much of inland NSW,” BoM says.

“Slow-moving showers and isolated storms are are also developing in the south east in a moist air mass. Severe thunderstorms will continue to develop across central parts of the state this afternoon.

“Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding over the next several hours in parts of the Southern Tablelands, Snowy Mountains, ACT and South Coast districts.”

For help during storms and floods call the ACT State Emergency Service on 132500.

The shaded part of the map shows the area predicted to be affected by the storms.
