New solar car parks and changes to vehicle duty to discourage highly polluting new vehicles feature in The Greens election policy on electric vehicles.
“Solar covered car parks will be a brand new thing for Canberra, providing shade, generating electricity and providing a place for people to charge electric vehicles, which will also help soak up daytime solar generation that can be in excess of the needs of the grid,” said ACT Greens Leader Shane Rattenbury.
“To test the value of solar car parks in the ACT, the ACT Greens will deliver two solar covered car parks combined with battery storage and EV charging. These could be located at Park and Ride car parks and could include low-speed EV charging, which is suited to cars being parked for multiple hours.”
“Over the past four years, the Greens’ electric vehicle policies have made the ACT the nation’s leader in uptake of electric vehicles.
“Our new rebates for low-income renters and apartment residents, loans for small business, and fast-chargers in every town centre will keep up the momentum.”
He said the ACT Greens will:
- Install banks of DC fast chargers in every town centre and in the Parliamentary Triangle
- Deliver two solar covered car parks with battery storage and electric vehicle charging
- Introduce a $4000 rebate to help low-income renters and apartment residents purchase an electric vehicle
- Facilitate the establishment of a thriving electric vehicle repair, reuse and recycling sector
- Offer zero interest loans up to $15,000 for small businesses to purchase zero emissions vehicles
- Offer zero interest loans for multi-unit buildings to to install shared electric vehicle chargers
- Expand the Electric Vehicle Training Centre at CIT to train more electric vehicle automotive technicians
- Make more changes to vehicle duty to discourage highly polluting new vehicles
- Maintain progress towards the prohibition of registration of new petrol and diesel cars from 2035.
